Sustainability

The problem

We work in an industry that always wants more, in a world that needs less. Graphic design is often superficially beautiful without consideration for the materials, processes, inks, size, quantities and technologies used in its production creating vacuous solutions that do not last and create toxic additions to landfill or worse end up in our rivers and oceans. Graphic design doesn’t have a great track record in sunstainability however there is now an emerging and evergrowing number of designers out there who realise this and want to be part of the solution not the problem.

Sustainable Graphic Design

This is interwoven through our whole design process. Questioning from the outset of ‘does this need to exist?’ and if so, then working with our clients to minimise the carbon footprint of our design solutions at every step of the way through thorough research and understanding in order to make informed choices on materials, technologies and processes.

Sustainable Web Design

Environmental Design Resources

Whilst the often misguided belief that digital has a lower environmental impact on print, this is often not as black and white as it may seem. Every website has a carbon footprint. From data centres to transmission networks to the billions of connected devices that we hold in our hands, it is all consuming electricity. The amount of images, graphics and text on a website all affect the loading time of a site and as a consequence the carbon footprint. Therefore it is crucial that anything uploaded to a site is no larger than it needs to be. For most of the sites we build, we run it through the Website Carbon Calculator to ensure the site is as optimised as possible. We also recommend clients use sustainable and solar powered website hosting such as The Web Neutral Project.
